Questions To Ask Before Hiring A Tree Crew
Tree work is one of the more dangerous trades. Verifying a contractor before they climb your tree is standard, not paranoid.
1. Ask for proof of current license
In Washington, contractors should be registered with L&I. Ask for the license number and verify it yourself on the state's website.
2. Ask for proof of general liability insurance
Ask for a certificate of insurance naming you. Confirm coverage limits are appropriate for the scope of the job.
3. Ask about workers' compensation
If a crew member is injured on your property and the contractor isn't carrying workers' comp, you can end up liable. Verify it.
4. Get the scope in writing
What's being removed, how far the wood is being cleaned up, whether the stump stays or goes, and total price.
5. Never pay the full price up front
A partial deposit is normal for large jobs. Full payment before work is a red flag.
6. Ask about the climbing/rigging plan
Especially for large or dead trees. If the answer is vague, that's information.
For any tree job, ask the contractor for proof of current license and general liability insurance before work begins, and confirm coverage details with your homeowners insurance carrier. This is standard consumer guidance for any tree work — not a claim about the specific crew dispatched to you.
